Hefe-weizen - $6 Directly translated this beer means "yeast wheat". It gets this name from the fact that it must be made with at least 50% wheat malt & from its apperance in the glass, which is meant to be cloudy. Wheat malt provides the soft malt character while the yeast is responsible for the flavors, ranging from banana to clove, with just enough hops to restrain the sweetness. ales, as they were often at war with their hop-growing neighbor, England,
making hops difficult to obtain. The
term “Scotch” denotes a beer of higher alcohol in Scotland, as opposed to the
term “Scottish” which is of a similar style, but lower in alcohol. Our Scotch ale is brewed with molasses and a
light addition of smoked malt to provide a balanced, malty sweet nose and a
refreshing, smooth taste with a slight alcohol warming finish.

Gato Gordo Wheat IPA $6
In the 1800’s IPA, or India pale ale, got its’ name from the tradition of British brewers supplying British troops in India with a special pale ale made to survive the long voyage. As hops have antimicrobial properties large amounts were added to the brew to ward off spoilage. Our wheat IPA keeps the tradition of large hop additions yet with 50% wheat in the recipe to soften the flavor allowing the caramel malts to come through providing nice malt flavor to balance the hops.
